Design Considerations
Curved Units Attached Between a Flat/Sunroof Unit & an Existing Structure
Curved Units which are attached between a Flat/Sunroof Unit (excluding pergolas) and an existing house, shall only be considered attached if the Curved Unit is attached to the existing house (C) for its full length (L) and the longest side of the combined unit (B) does not exceed twice the curved length (L). The Flat/Sunroof Unit in this case can be considered attached. This style requires all coloumns to be embedded into footings.
Curved Units Attached to Flat/sunroof Unit One or Both Sides
Curved Units which are attached one or both sides to Flat/Sunroof Units, (excluding pergolas) must be attached to an existing house for at least 75% of the curved opening length (O) to be considered attached. Flat/Sunroof Unit/s must be deemed attached as detailed in the Flat/Sunroof Unit section below to allow the Curved Unit to be considered attached.
Curved Units are considered attached both sides if both Flat/Sunroof 1 and 2 comply with attachment rules for Flat/Sunroof Units as detailed below. Curved Units are considered attached one side if only one Flat/Sunroof Unit exists and it complies with the attachment rules for Flat/Sunroof Units as detailed below.
Design Options
When designing an Outback, consideration should be given to both Roof sheet direction, and the orientation of any openings and overhangs involved. These are often determined by appearence and drainage requirements. The following charts show some of the normal options used, but contact Stratco if assistance is required.

Note: When attaching Curved Verandahs to Sunroof Units, please refer to “The Rules of Attachment to Standard Outback Systems” in the Outback Sunroof Span Tables Book.
Available attached to the home, the curved roof can span up to 6.6 metres wide in both Multispan and Clearspan designs. When combined with flat roof or pergola sections it becomes part of a system, with the elegant curved roof forming the central feature of the design. Outback Rooflites are also available to supply natural filtered light when Outback Deck is used in Clearspan designs.
Stylish & Versatile
The Outback Curved Roof provides a stylish alternative to the Outback Gable. Its smooth clean lines add a contemporary look to the home. The height of the unit is approximately one eighth of the opening width. This creates a smooth curve which cleanly and effortlessly flows from one side of the unit to the other.
Versatility is a key feature of the Outback Curved Roof. It is available attached to the home or as a freestanding unit which makes it perfect for a wide range of applications; anything from a covered walkway to the main feature of an entertaining area.
Integrate with other Stratco Outback products
The Outback Curved Roof has been designed to integrate with other Stratco Outback products, such as the Outback Flat Roof, Pergola, or the new Sunroof. When combined with flat roof or pergola sections it becomes part of a system, with the elegant curved roof forming the central feature of the design.
Choice of styles
Two styles of Outback Curved Roof are available; Clearspan and Multispan. Each style has its own type of roofing material.
Clearspan Curved Roof
The Stratco Outback Clearspan Curved Roof uses Outback Deck running perpendicular to the front rafter which creates a clean streamlined look. The roof area is left clean and uncluttered with a ceiling like appearance from beneath. Outback Deck is supplied flat and easily curved on site to the required radius during the installation process.
Multispan Curved Roof
The Stratco Outback Multispan Curved Roof uses CGI running parallel to the front rafter on purlins. Polycarbonate roofing can also be used on the Multispan Curved Roof, but only for radii greater than 3m, which translates into a span greater than 2.7m. The look achieved with this material is light and airy. CGI is supplied precurved to the required radius and simply needs to be placed on top of the purlins and screwed in position, making installation easy.
Create impressive visual effects
The different roofing materials create unique visual effects, as does the size of the radius. A larger radius will create a large open area similar in effect to an Outback Gable, while a small radius creates a unique dormer style turret with a vastly different feel. A unique effect can also be gained by using several smaller radius areas separated by flat roof areas or using larger radius to create an impressive wave-like roof.
Design excellence
Curved flashings complete the Outback Curved Roof Verandah, ensuring that the unit is weather resistant. The front curved flashing on the Stratco Outback Clearspan also acts as a front gutter, discretely carrying water into the main gutter on the unit. Each flashing is individually curved to suit each job and adds to the clean stylish appearance of the Curved Roof. These curved flashings are available in a range of colours to suit the Outback range.
Clean, wide spanning ability
The Outback Curved Roof uses curved 100 x 50mm RHS for rafters, creating structurally strong beams that are able to achieve clean wide spans.
The maximum opening width for the curved roof is 6.6 metres, with the minimum opening 1.2 metres. Two different thicknesses of beam are available; 3mm which is able to achieve the radius required for spans greater than 2.1 metres, and 4mm which is able to achieve the radius required for spans as narrow as 1.2 metres wide. The beams are powder coated to match the range of Outback colours available.
Installation is quick and easy
Installation of the Outback Curved Roof Verandah is quick and easy. The curved rafter has no intermediate joins and is simply attached to the valley beams using curve-to-valley brackets. These brackets are made from strong 1mm galvanised steel which has been powder coated to suit the Outback range of colours. The brackets use the same number and type of fixings as the rafter-to-valley brackets, and have been designed to complement the appearance of the unit.
