If you have any concerns your roofing may have been damaged in a recent storm, you might need to assess your roof for damage. We suggest you check your gutters and downpipes, check for missing shingles, broken gutters, damage around ventilation structures or leaks in your roofing.

If you have sustained any roofing damage, we recommend getting it fixed as soon as possible.  Failing to fix a damaged roof quickly could lead to more significant problems, particularly if you have water leaking into your ceiling space.

Assessing The Damage

There are various types of roofing damage that can occur during a storm:

Wind
High winds can remove or damage shingles, allowing water to get into your roof space.

Hail
Hail can leave dents in shingles or knock shingle granules loose. This can be problematic as the shingle granules help protect your roof from the elements. Extreme hail could also leave holes in polycarbonate roof sheets or cause damage to Colorbond steel roofing.  The aesthetics of your roofing can be ruined by these dents and pockmarks.

Standing Water
If your roofing and gutters have not been well designed and maintained to drain all water effectively, standing water can cause problems.  For example, blocked gutters can cause water to back up and get underneath your shingles and moisture can enter the roof space.

Wind, rain and hail can all cause different types of damage to various areas of your home.  Take care when assessing for any damages ensuring you keep safe, particularly if you are entering your ceiling space or climbing onto your roof.  If you are not confident you can safely assess the damage yourself, we strongly recommend using an experienced roofing specialist to assess your roofing for damage.

Either you or your roofing specialist should take photos of any damages.  This will help with any insurance claims and is also very helpful in planning the repairs. The photos will be helpful in ensuring any replacement parts match your existing roofing.

Where To Look For Storm Damage

Sometimes, storm damage to your roof may be obvious, while other times you may need to carefully check areas of your roof you may not have considered.  Some of the areas you should check include:

  • Shingles. Check for any missing or broken shingles.
  • Gutters. Check for a build-up of any material, including shingle granules in your gutters.
  • Windows, skylights and vents. Check any windows, skylights and vents remain secure with no loose or missing flashing around them. Ensure there are no cracks, broken glass, loose weather stripping or torn screens.
  • Seals. Check any seals in your roofing remain secure and are not missing.
  • Water damage and leaks. Check there is no water-related damage or leaks. Check both the roof space and inside the home for any leaks or water damage.
  • Outside areas. Walk around the exterior of your home checking for fallen tree branches, loose fencing, damage to outdoor furniture and any flat surfaces such as patios and decks should be checked for hail damage.

Contact Your Insurance Company

If you have found any damage, contact your insurance company and get your claim started as soon as possible.  Clarify the claims process with your insurance company and ensure you follow their preferred process to maximise your ability to recover any costs through your insurance company.  An experienced roofing specialist should be able to assist you with providing any required proof or documentation to assist with your claim.

Provide your insurance company with as much information as you can, including any photos you or your roofing repairer has taken to assist with getting your claim processed as quickly as possible.

Repairing Roof Damage Yourself?

You may decide you would prefer to fix your roofing damage yourself rather than use a roofing specialist.  Minor damage may be simple to repair and performing repairs could save you money.  If you intend to submit an insurance claim, we recommend discussing this option with your insurance company before deciding to repair yourself.
