Tools and Materials You'll Need

Before you begin, gather the following tools and materials.

Tools

Materials

  • Hardaz® retaining posts or beams
  • 150mm x 50mm or 200mm x 50mm timber rails
  • Pre-mixed concrete
  • Hardaz® joiner posts
  • Hardaz® corner posts
  • Hardaz® end caps (optional)
  • Wall capping (optional)

Step 1: Plan and Measure Your Wall

Start by determining the desired length and height of your retaining wall.

For the most economical use of timber, Hardaz® posts should be spaced at 1200mm centres. Mark out the wall location using a string line to ensure a straight and accurate installation.

Careful planning at this stage will help minimise material waste and ensure a smoother installation process.

Step 2: Mark and Dig Post Holes

Using your measurements as a guide, mark the position of each post along the string line.

Dig post holes at 1200mm intervals. The depth of each hole will depend on the height of your retaining wall and local site conditions.

Ensure the holes are evenly spaced and aligned before proceeding.

Step 3: Install and Concrete the Posts

Position the Hardaz® retaining posts into the prepared holes.

Use a spirit level to ensure each post is perfectly vertical, then concrete them into place. Align the tops of the posts with your string line to maintain a consistent wall height.

Allow the concrete to fully set before continuing with the installation.

Choosing the Right Post

Different Hardaz® posts are designed for different applications:

  • Joiner Posts - Used for straight wall runs.
  • Corner Posts - Designed for 90-degree corners.
  • End Caps - Provide a neat, professional finish at the end of the wall.

Step 4: Cut the Timber Rails to Length

Measure the distance between posts and cut your timber rails to suit using a circular saw.

Hardaz® is compatible with:

  • 150mm x 50mm rails
  • 200mm x 50mm rails

Take care to ensure all cuts are accurate for a clean and professional result.

Step 5: Insert the Rails

Once cut, simply slide the timber rails into the Hardaz® retaining posts.

One of the standout features of the Hardaz® system is the recessed post design, which allows for minor adjustments during installation. This helps achieve a precise fit while also accommodating future timber movement and shrinkage.

Because the system doesn't require fasteners, installation is quick and straightforward, helping you save both time and money.

Step 6: Add a Capping (Optional)

For an enhanced finish, consider installing a capping along the top of the wall.

A capping not only improves the appearance of the retaining wall but can also provide a more comfortable edge around garden beds and landscaping features.

Once installed, your Hardaz® retaining wall is complete and ready to enjoy.
