Introducing Season 22
After months of anticipation, The Block returned for Season 22, introducing viewers to an exciting new location, five determined teams and some of the biggest format changes in the show's history. Set against the stunning backdrop of Mount Eliza on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula, Season 22 promises luxury homes, breathtaking bay views and plenty of challenges from the very first episode.
While there wasn't a great deal of building action in the premiere, Episode 1 laid the foundations for what is shaping up to be one of the most unique editions of The Block to date.
A Premium New Location
For the first time in the show's history, The Block has headed to Mount Eliza, where five architecturally designed luxury homes overlook Port Phillip Bay. The picturesque Mornington Peninsula setting offers a dramatic backdrop for the competition and reflects the premium market the finished homes are expected to appeal to.
Unlike some previous seasons, which centred around renovating older properties, the homes in Season 22 are contemporary residences designed with modern family living in mind. Across the coming weeks, contestants will transform each property into a high-end home while working within tight deadlines, budgets and room reveal schedules.
Meet The Teams
Season 22 welcomes five teams from across Australia, each bringing their own personalities, experience and design style to the competition.
Lisa & Rosco (Yellow Team) represent Western Australia and made an immediate impression with their calm, easy-going personalities. While they appear relaxed on the surface, they're quietly competitive and are hoping their teamwork will help them stay consistent throughout the competition.
Representing South Australia are Adam & Jolene (Red Team), who quickly established themselves as practical, hard-working renovators. They aren't afraid to get their hands dirty and seem determined to prove they can compete with some of the more experienced teams.
Rick & Tayla (Green Team) bring valuable building knowledge to the competition. Rick's background in the trade industry could give the Victorian couple a significant advantage when construction becomes more demanding, while Tayla's design ideas may help balance practicality with style.
Queensland couple Chantel & Wyatt (Blue Team) arrived with plenty of enthusiasm and positive energy. Although they don't claim to have the strongest renovation background, they're eager to learn and aren't afraid to tackle whatever challenges lie ahead.
Rounding out the competition are Sev & Courtney (Pink Team), another Queensland team who appear confident, ambitious and ready to make their mark. Their competitive nature was evident from the outset, and they'll no doubt be aiming to impress both the judges and their fellow contestants.
Although it was only the first episode, there were already a few personalities that stood out. It'll be interesting to see how each team's approach evolves once the pressure of weekly room reveals, budgets and tight deadlines really starts to kick in. I also can't wait to see the homes come to life, there's so much potential in the architecture, and I'm excited to watch each team add their own style as the competition unfolds.
The Biggest Twist In Block History
The biggest talking point of the premiere wasn't the homes, it was where the contestants would be living.
For the first time ever, all five teams will live together in one shared house rather than staying in caravans or on-site accommodation. The luxury residence offers far more comfort than contestants have experienced in previous years, but it also means there'll be very little opportunity to escape the competition.
The twist immediately divided opinions. Some teams embraced the chance to socialise after long days on site, while others questioned how sharing a home with their direct competitors could impact strategy, privacy and the inevitable tensions that build during a renovation competition.
New Rules Mean Every Hour Counts
Scotty Cam also revealed one of the biggest operational changes in the show's history.
Due to local council regulations, work on site will now be limited to set construction hours, meaning contestants can no longer work well into the night to finish rooms before judging. Instead, success in Season 22 will rely heavily on planning, organisation and making every hour on site count.
With less flexibility than previous years, teams will need to carefully coordinate trades, deliveries and installations while still delivering beautifully finished rooms each week.
A Focus On Quiet Luxury
Contestants also received the overall design brief for Season 22: quiet luxury.
Rather than bold colours or trend-driven styling, the judges are looking for elegant, timeless interiors that showcase quality craftsmanship, premium finishes and thoughtful design. The brief suits the prestigious Mount Eliza location and challenges contestants to create homes that feel luxurious without being overdone.
It'll be fascinating to see how each team interprets the brief while still creating homes with enough personality to stand out in judging.
A Familiar Sight For Stratco Fans, But Bigger And Better Than Ever
While the contestants and homes naturally took centre stage, it's hard to miss the huge Stratco Big Shed.
Scotty's Stratco Big Shed is positioned at the heart of the site, the large shed serves as a central hub for storing materials, tools and equipment throughout the build. On a project as ambitious as The Block, practical storage and efficient organisation are essential behind the scenes, helping keep trades moving and materials protected.
It's great to see a Stratco Big Shed playing an important role in supporting one of Australia's biggest renovation and television projects. Keep an eye out for the Stratco shed as the competition continues, you'll likely spot it throughout the show as the homes begin to take shape.
My First Impressions
After watching the premiere, I'm already looking forward to seeing how the homes come together over the next few weeks. The contemporary designs and beautiful Mount Eliza location provide a fantastic foundation, and I think the "quiet luxury" brief has the potential to produce some truly stunning spaces. I love that the homes feel modern without being over the top, and I think they'll really suit the coastal surroundings. It'll be interesting to see how each team interprets the brief while still creating a home that reflects their own personality and design style. I also can't wait to see how the spaces evolve from construction sites into beautifully finished homes, especially once landscaping and exterior details start coming together later in the competition.
As for the contestants, it's still very early, but Courtney and Sev are my early favourites. They came across as confident, genuine and ready to take on whatever The Block throws at them. I really enjoyed their energy in the premiere, and they already seem to work well together. With Courtney's construction background and Sev's interior design experience, they'll definitely be a team I'll be keeping a close eye on throughout the competition. That said, every team brought something different to the table, and I'm looking forward to getting to know all of the contestants a little better as the weeks go on.
That's just my first impression, though! One of the things I love most about The Block is how quickly opinions can change once the renovations begin.
Looking Ahead
While Episode 1 focused on introducing the contestants and explaining the major changes, it successfully set the stage for an exciting competition ahead. With luxury homes, strict construction hours, a shared living arrangement and five determined teams all chasing the ultimate prize, Season 22 already feels unlike any that have come before.
The real renovation work begins next episode as demolition gets underway and the contestants start bringing their visions to life. We'll be following The Block each week, sharing recaps, standout design moments and any familiar Stratco products that appear along the way.
