Start by thinking of the placement of your vertical garden

The Holman Vertical Garden range is designed to suit a wide range of locations, from alfresco areas to north-facing walls. The flexibility lies in your hands as you decide where to install it. However, it is essential to consider the amount of sunlight required by your chosen plants when determining the placement. Different plants have varying sunlight needs, so it's crucial to make appropriate plant selections based on the available sunlight in your chosen location. By ensuring the right amount of sun exposure, you can create an optimal growing environment for your Vertical Garden and promote healthy plant growth.

Consider what soil you will use in your vertical garden

Since the plants are not in the ground, it is crucial to use a high-quality potting mix that can retain water and provide the necessary nutrients. We strongly advise against using ground soil, as it tends to harden and obstruct the drainage system of the GreenWall. For optimal results, we recommend a combination of vertical garden planting mix and coir potting mix in a 50/50 ratio. This blend will ensure that your plants receive the essential nutrients they need and maintain adequate moisture levels, preventing them from drying out.

Selecting the right plants for your GreenWall is crucial

To ensure successful growth and a thriving GreenWall, it is important to select plants that are well-suited to your specific environment and the location of your vertical garden. Different plants have varying sunlight and shade requirements, so it is crucial to make appropriate plant choices accordingly. Depending on the placement of your vertical garden, you could even choose to start a salad garden full of herbs or fruits! Below are some plant selections you might choose if your vertical garden is going to receive around 6-8 hours of sunlight each day:

  • Basil
  • Parsley
  • Thyme
  • Lettuce
  • Strawberries
  • Kale
  • Mint
  • Tomatoes (Tiny Tom)
  • Coriander

We encourage all our customers to ask our trained horticulturists in our Stratco Garden Centres for plant advice. It’s what they’re trained for!

Don’t underestimate the need for watering your vertical garden

One of the standout features of the GreenWall Vertical Garden Kit is its integrated watering system, designed to simplify the watering process. With this system, you only need to connect a garden hose or poly pipe to a single point on the module. The clever adjustable drippers ensure that every pot receives water evenly, promoting optimal plant growth.

Since the pots in the vertical garden kit are compact, we recommend a frequent watering schedule with smaller amounts of water. As a general guideline, we suggest watering 2-3 times per day, for approximately 30 seconds to 1 minute each time. However, it's important to note that the ideal watering frequency may vary based on factors such as plant selection, temperature, and the amount of direct sunlight your vertical garden receives.

To determine the best watering schedule for your specific setup, we recommend observing how long it takes for the pot to reach overflow during a watering session. Once you have this time frame, you can slightly reduce it by a few seconds to find the optimal watering duration.

Get ready to install your GreenWall Vertical Garden Kit

After all your planning, you’ll have a good idea of where you want your GreenWall to go, its placement, and what plants you’re going to use. If you don’t, don’t stress! There’s no harm in installing your vertical garden and getting soil and plants as you go. Below we run through some steps on how to install a GreenWall Vertical Garden Kit with Irrigation System:

  1. Hold the module against the wall and use a level to ensure it is perfectly straight. This step is crucial, especially if you plan to add additional modules later on.
  2. Locate the two circles with "flowers" around them on the module. Place a marker in each hole and mark the corresponding spots on the wall. These marks will serve as your guide for attaching the bracket.
  3. Drill a hole at each marked spot and insert a wall plug into each hole. Securely screw the metal bracket into place.
  4. Hang your first module on the wall. Use the included coupling to connect your second module, and repeat steps 1, 2, and 3 for each additional module you wish to install.
  5. To save time, it is recommended to plan your GreenWall design before planting, considering factors like plant selection and arrangement.
  6. Remove the pots from the module and fill them with plants and soil, following your desired arrangement.
  7. Securely attach the planted pots to the module, ensuring they are firmly in place.
  8. Make sure to insert the adjustable drippers into the soil of each pot. This will ensure accurate and controlled watering for your plants.
  9. For precise and even watering, attach your hose or poly pipe to one of the modules and utilize a Holman Misting Tap timer. This setup will automate the watering process, providing consistent moisture to your Vertical Garden.
